During Hair Transplantation, hair is extracted from the donor area, either by removing a strip of hair bearing skin or by removing each follicular unit separately, which is called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
With FUE, a specialized punch with less than 1mm diameter is used to extract the hair from the scalp. The main advantage of this technique is that follicular units are extracted directly form the scalp rather than larger groups, which deters the utilization of scalpel and stitching.
The photo below shows the follicular units after they have been extracted by the FUE technique. The importance of this photo is to show that the hair has not been damaged during extraction.
